Excerpt:
“So no more asking about the Dent until our bond is healed?”
She looked at me softly, took a deep breath, and nodded.
“You want something to eat? I brought snacks.”
She laughed. “You really did come prepared, didn’t you?”
“Well, I hoped for this, but I wasn’t sure.”
She nodded, and I went to the tree where I put the bag down and brought it to her.
I sat on the ground with my back against the boulder she was sitting on, taking out all the snacks.
She grabbed the crisps and opened the bag.
“So you and Tabitha are really not together anymore?”
“No,” I said. “I broke it off the minute I woke up. Tabitha still thinks that I’m under a spell as I told her to fight for me.”
She sighed. I looked up at her and saw her eyes were closed.
“What?”
She shook her head and opened her eyes. “She reminded me yesterday about my promise.”
I felt as if I could kill that scaley bitch. “So, that was where it came from?”
“I didn’t know, Blake. You always sat with them.”
“I told you why I had, Elena.”
“Yes, you did. Don’t be mad at Tabitha, please. If I was her, I would have done the same.”
I looked at her again. “Say what now?”
She laughed. “You sound like Becky.”
“Well, Becky has a point, Elena. Tabitha is brilliant. If you give in to what she says, she will take the opportunity and try to wedge herself between whatever we have.”
“She was one of your best friends.”
“Friends with benefits, never best.” I corrected her. “Can we please not speak about the Snow Dragon?”
“Fine.” She smiled. “You really forgot about the mountain?”
I nodded.
She laughed. “Tabitha didn’t tell you that it was you who trained me.”
I chuckled. “Oh, she hated our training. She was always so insecure, but then again, she had all the right to be.”
“Whatever.”
“C’mon Elena, you know how it felt. Being so dark, and whenever we got close to one another, it just washed away. It was addictive.”
“It was. I actually destroyed my room.”
“Really?”
